For many people hypnosis is still a fascinating mystery, witchcraft that can magically fix whatever problems they face. In this post I want to dispel some of those myths.
So, what really is hypnosis?
There are many definitions floating around, including the one given by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis: “The bypass of the critical factor of the conscious mind and the establishment of acceptable selective thinking.” Does this makes sense to you? Congratulations if it does! Because this is just a very complicated way of explaining something that does not exists. This is just professional jargon used to increase the mystery.
The truth is hypnosis is just communication. It is communication with that part of your mind that is responsible for your automatic behaviours (think driving), emotions, reflexes and many other systems that helps you in your day-to-day activities.
That part of your mind works so well, that most of the time we pay no attention to it. Only when we do pay attention, we find that it’a outside our conscious awareness and it may be hard to communicate with. That part of your mind is known as the subconscious mind.
So here you have it:
Hypnosis is communication with your subconscious mind — the seat of your emotions, behaviours, self-healing systems (e.g. immune system), and many other structures that keep you alive and thriving.
